Faith, Gulu, Uganda

Faith lives with her family in Gulu City, Unyama Parish, Tepwoyo village. She belongs to family group called Kica Ber supported by Acholi Child and Family Programme. “…before joining Acholi Child and Family Programme sponsorship program, I didn’t have knowledge and skills in farming mostly farming as business, I used to grow sunflowers, simsim, groundnuts and cow peas majorly for home consumption and little was sold to meet basic needs, but our family lives hardly change for better…” said Faith. To Faith participating in family group activities was a major boost to her personal and family growth, as such the group was introduced to various activities that included, VSLA, micro-enterprise training, farming as business training among others, every time we had a training in a group, I was able to rejuvenate my dream to break the poverty cycle in my family.”..VSLS was an important catalysis to business, as it opened up access to smaller  credit through our weekly savings and  loans: “I even started my own small business of baking bread.”

Faith is very committed to growing her business and she also believes that she will breakthrough and support her family.

Recognizing the social-economic challenges face by caregivers especially women from poor backgrounds, Faith was identified and enrolled in farming as business training program. The training was for three days through government attached agricultural extension officer who took them through the basics in enterprise selection, financial literacy, agri-business skills among others where she gained hand-on experience. After the training, ACFP through support from Child Fund Uganda supported their group with 30 piglets as an enterprise they had identified.

“…Iam actively involved in piggery project because it has changed the social-economic landscape of my family…” said Faith. Faith’s determination to improve her living condition is seen in her commitment in expanding her piggery project, every year Faith sales on average of 20 piglets at cost of 150,000 and she is able to generate sh3,000,000. Generally, I feel I have more control over my life. I can plan better, and I rely on my own enterprise to support my children’s needs like education, health and clothing. My plan is to expand his piggery project.

Faith is able to support her son Rwotomiya Junior at school through her small business and piggery project.
